Enhancing Capacity of 2,157 Indigenous chicken priority value chain actors for improved incomes and food security is a two-year project funded by the Swedish government and the County Government of Kilifi through Agricultural Sector Development Support Program II (ASDSP II) implemented in partnership with Community Agricultural Resource Development Program (CARDEP) as a lead partner, Anglican Development Services (ADS) and Pwani University (PU). The overall goal of the Activity is to increase productivity, entrepreneurial skills and market access along the Value Chain through value chain actors and service providers.
The project works towards achieving six objectives:
- Developing and inclusive mechanism for enhancing capacity of Indigenous chicken input suppliers for increased marketed annual volume of day-old chicks from 233,000 to 455,000 by 2022.
- Establishing mechanism for enhancing capacities of 2157 indigenous chicken producers to meet annual market demand for 745,600 birds by 2022.
- Enhancing capacity development for 31(M12, F16, Y3) indigenous chicken traders on business and technical skill development to meet marketed annual population of 378000 birds by 2022.
- Support mechanisms for formulation and enforcement of policies, regulations and standards.
- Support capacity development of 8 potential processors on market information systems technology to strengthen suppliers- processors consumer linkages by 2022
- Development mechanisms for monitoring, evaluation, across learning and documentation of best practices among the value chain actors.
Activities
- Training input suppliers on good incubator management
- Training input suppliers, Producers- farmers on business skills development
- Enhancing capacities of producers on farm feed formulation and chicken husbandry.
- Train traders on business plan development, coasting, record keeping, market penetration, mindset change and lobbying.
- Linking processors to live bird suppliers, market and financial service providers
- Formulate chicken policies and standards
- Development of linkages to service providers
